Facts About Obesity Epidemic in America!!

Obesity emerging as an epidemic among US population now a days. It has become a topic of major concern for healthcare system. Obesity is very difficult to manage as it is highly lifestyle related.

• Obesity numbers are shocking- 50% women, 15% of the children in the age group 6-19 and 31% of American adults are obese. Maximum obesity can be seen in the age group 50-59 years.

• The East South Central (Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama) region of the US is the highest obese region. On the contrary the New England Region (New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts) is the least obese region.

• Obesity is a cost to the society. People spend millions on visits to doctors, medications, treatments for conditions related to obesity like hypertension, heart diseases and diabetes.
• Obesity has become major reason for diseases like diabetes mellitus and osteoarthritis. The cost because of diabetes mellitus is more than $100 billion while it’s around $25 billion for osteoarthritis.

• There is a long list of diseases related to obesity i.e. congestive heart failure, Cholecystitis, Cholelithiasis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Sleep apnea, Fatty liver disease, Angina pectoris, Pregnancy complications, Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), respiratory problems, Psychological disorders, Uric acid nephrolithiasis, Stress urinary incontinence, Cancer of the kidney, Breast rectum, prostate, gall bladder, colon. Americans are at higher risk of these ailments.

• In most of the cases of obesity surgeries, follow-up surgeries occur for more than 20% of the patients.
