Know the Difference Between Eating Disorders and Obesity!!

Eating disorders and obesity are two different terms but share remarkable similarities for example binge eating is common among people who have eating disorders as well as who are obese. Furthermore depression, anxiety and other mood disorders are some of the symptoms that are associated with both eating disorders and obesity. However eating disorders and obesity both leads to weight related problems.

Eating disorders includes:-

Anorexia nervosa: - It is a self starvation process. In this disorder, people eat very less and have fear of becoming overweight.
Bulimia nervosa: - It includes cycles of binge eating and purging. People with this disorder have a fear of gaining weight even though their weight may be normal.
Binge eating disorders: - It refers to as eating large amount of food in short period of time or overeating. This disorder is mainly accompanied by the feeling of depression, guilt or disgust.
Disordered eating: - It includes bingeing, purging or restrictive dieting.

Furthermore eating disorders may leads to certain serious health conditions like

• Delayed menstruation
• Cardiac arrest
• Damage to important organs like heart and brain
• Starvation and other nutritional deficiencies
• Depression and anxiety
• Stunted growth

However obesity is defined as the abnormally high proportion of body fat. It leads to a number of life-threatening health conditions like

• Stroke
• Cardiovascular disease
• Gallbladder disease
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Respiratory problems
• Cancer
• Arthritis
• Depression and anxiety
